It emphasizes the rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities in society. Article 40 of the CRPD mandates that States Parties, or signatories to the Convention, regularly convene at a Conference of States Parties (COSP) to discuss and review the implementation of the Convention.

Since its inception in 2008, the COSP has been held annually at the United Nations headquarters in New York. These conferences feature a variety of themes and issues addressed through round-table discussions, interactive dialogues, and side events, providing a platform for extensive deliberation and exchange.

The seventeenth session of the Conference of States Parties to the CRPD (COSP17) is scheduled to take place in the General Assembly Hall on June 11, 2024, and in Conference Room 4 from June 12-13, 2024, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

Members of DIDEPAS are deeply involved in every facet of the Conference, actively contributing to broader civil society engagement through their participation in the Civil Society Coordination Mechanism. This involvement ensures that the voices and perspectives of persons with disabilities are well-represented and influential in the ongoing dialogue and decision-making processes of the COSP.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row full_width="stretch_row" disable_element="yes" css=".vc_custom_1731523128181{padding-top: 60px !important;padding-bottom: 60px !important;background-color: #efefef !important;}" el_class="inner_content"][vc_column][vc_column_text]

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES (IDPD) CELEBRATED ON 3 DECEMBER

The International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) is observed annually on December 3rd to promote awareness and mobilize support for critical issues pertaining to the inclusion of persons with disabilities in society. It aims to increase understanding of disability issues and garner support for the dignity, rights, and well-being of persons with disabilities. The day encourages the participation of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic, and cultural life.

Links between CRPD and SDGs : Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD):

The CRPD is a landmark treaty adopted by the United Nations to protect the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities. It ensures that persons with disabilities enjoy human rights on an equal basis with others and promotes their full inclusion in society.

During the 2012 Rio+20 Conference, Member States initiated the development of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to follow the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), ending in 2015. The SDGs, targeting the period from 2015 to 2030, cover environmental, economic, and social dimensions and integrate into the UN's global agenda.

Disability is addressed across the SDGs, particularly in education, employment, inequality, and urban development. The SDGs and the CRPD are interconnected in promoting the inclusion and rights of persons with disabilities. Here are some key links:

SDG 4 (Quality Education): The CRPD advocates for inclusive education systems, aligning with SDG 4's goal of ensuring equal access to education and lifelong learning opportunities for all, including persons with disabilities.

SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth): The CRPD promotes the right to work for persons with disabilities, supporting SDG 8's aim of achieving full and productive employment and decent work for all, including persons with disabilities.

SDG 10 (Reduced Inequality): The CRPD's focus on non-discrimination and equality directly contributes to SDG 10, which aims to reduce inequality within and among countries by promoting the social, economic, and political inclusion of all, including persons with disabilities.

SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities): The CRPD emphasizes accessible urban development, which complements SDG 11's goal of making cities inclusive, safe, and sustainable for everyone, including persons with disabilities.

SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals): Both the CRPD and SDG 17 highlight the importance of data collection and monitoring. The CRPD promotes the collection of disaggregated data to inform policy, aligning with SDG 17's emphasis on enhancing capacity-building support and increasing the availability of high-quality, timely, and reliable data.

By integrating the principles of the CRPD into the SDGs, the global community aims to create a more inclusive world where persons with disabilities can fully participate and contribute to sustainable development.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row disable_element="yes" css=".vc_custom_1731523133237{padding-top: 60px !important;padding-bottom: 60px !important;}" el_class="inner_content"][vc_column][vc_column_text]

THE GLOBAL DISABILITY SUMMIT (GDS)

Global Disability Summit 2025: Advancing Inclusion and Rights

The third Global Disability Summit (GDS) will take place in Berlin on April 2-3, 2025, co-hosted by Germany, Jordan, and the International Disability Alliance (IDA). Building on previous summits, GDS 2025 aims to advance the rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities worldwide through international cooperation.

About the Global Disability Summit:

Established in 2017, the GDS is a unique global mechanism dedicated to improving the lives of persons with disabilities, especially in the Global South. It brings together international, regional, and national stakeholders to promote disability-inclusive development and humanitarian action, bridging the gap between disability inclusion and development cooperation. Beyond the biennial summit, the GDS involves continuous advocacy and mobilization of the disability rights movement, emphasizing partnerships between member states and Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs).

Past and Future Summits:

2018, London: The first summit galvanized global efforts for disability inclusion, securing commitments from governments, international organizations, and civil society.

2022, Oslo: The second summit continued building on the commitments made in 2018, focusing on inclusive health, climate action, and the rights of women and girls with disabilities.

GDS 2025 Goals:

The 2025 summit aims to:

Highlight best practices and address implementation gaps.

Align discussions with the UN CRPD.

Promote disability rights at all political levels.

Foster international cooperation and address funding gaps.

Improve data collection to inform policies.

DIDEPAS Participation:

DIDEPAS actively participated in the 2018 summit. These groups are committed to ensuring the implementation of CRPD Article 4.3 at the Conference of States Parties.

Led by a Steering Committee, which includes DIDEPAS as a member, the CSCM is responsible for several key tasks:

Advocating for the meaningful inclusion of persons with disabilities in all stages of the Conference.

Selecting speakers and civil society representatives for the Conference through an open and transparent voting process.

Developing common messaging for speakers representing the Mechanism.

Organizing the Civil Society Forum.

DIDEPAS, an NGO accredited to the Conference of States Parties to the CRPD and holding ECOSOC status, actively participates in the Civil Society CRPD Forum discussions. This forum is held annually on the Monday before the Conference of States Parties at the UN Headquarters in New York. Through these efforts, DIDEPAS and the CSCM ensure that the voices of persons with disabilities are heard and considered in all relevant decision-making processes.

To continue these vital efforts, DIDEPAS seek your support in the following areas:

To cover the costs of organizing the Civil Society Forum and ensuring the participation of diverse representatives from the disability community.

To enable persons with disabilities, especially from underrepresented regions, to attend the Conference of States Parties and the Civil Society Forum.

To enhance the capacity of DIDEPAS and the CSCM in coordinating activities, advocacy efforts, and developing common messaging.

To amplify our impact in areas such as communication, strategy development, and stakeholder engagement.

Your support will help ensure that the principle of “Nothing About Us, Without Us” is upheld and that persons with disabilities have a meaningful voice in international policy-making processes.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

[vc_section full_width=”stretch_row” css=”.vc_custom_1585059089922{padding-top: 10px !important;padding-bottom: 15px !important;background-color: #f6f9f8 !important;background-position: center […]
